GAAP changes name to ‘Fracarita International’

Global Action Against Poverty (GAAP), the coordinating NGO for development aid of the Brothers of Charity, is changing its name. Their previous operations revealed that the name that was chosen did not quite cover the whole meaning and could even give rise to misunderstandings. That is why it was decided to change the name of ‘GAAP’ to ‘Fracarita International’ and to name every regional office ‘Fracarita’, followed by the name of the country. Their aim is to present themselves with one name and so remove all current confusion, without affecting their objectives: to support the international development of the Congregation of the Brothers of Charity on all levels.

Leadership seminar in Sri Lanka

From 5 till 16 December, three Asian coordinators of Global Action Against Poverty participated at a seminar on leadership in Sri Lanka. Several brothers superior also attended the same formation. The first module, given by Mr Guido Declercq (Coordinator International Institute Cannon Triest, Belgium), focused on the practical aspects of leadership. The second module, taught by Bro. dr. René Stockman (General Superior of the Brothers of Charity) looked at leadership from a spiritual angle. The same programme had also been organized in October 2011 for the regional coordinators of GAAP and brothers superior in Africa. The training is part of a long-term formation programme aimed at an increased professionalization of the apostolate works.

Take-over psychiatric facility in Ethiopia

On December 7th, the Brothers of Charity took over the management of the Gefersa Mental Health Rehabilitation Center (GMHF) near Addis Ababa at the request of the Ethiopian Catholic Church and the Ethiopian government, who considers the congregation a reliable partner to offer professional psychiatric treatment, boarding and rehabilitative occupational therapy. The facility will serve as a model for replication and promotion of quality care throughout the country.
